A simple Perl script which monitors system load and if the load is higher than a specified amount, it performs user-defined commands in an attempt to lower the load. Once the load has returned to a normal level (also user-defined), it will perform another set of specified commands to bring the server back to normal. Logdog is a tool that monitors messages passing through syslogd and takes action based on key words and phrases. Logdog has an easy to read configuration file which allows you to specify a list of key words or phrases to alert on, and a list of commands that can be run when those words are encountered.
